Portobello Market is one of the most visited street markets in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors to Notting Hill every year. But despite that reputation, its digital presence wasn't doing the name justice.
The brief was clear: build a Squarespace website that finally matched the quality of the market itself: answering the questions visitors were actually typing into Google before they arrived, and that worked properly on the phones they were using when they got there.
We rebuilt the site from scratch on Squarespace, beginning with a thorough audit of the search terms people were using to find Portobello Market and its surrounding area. That keyword research shaped the site's information architecture: dedicated pages for opening times, stall locations, seasonal events, and the surrounding neighbourhood.
The design was market-forward and image-led, capturing the colour and character of Portobello Road without sacrificing usability. Every page was built mobile-first, since the majority of visitors were landing on phones while already in transit.
On-page SEO was applied across every page: optimised title tags and meta descriptions, structured heading hierarchies, descriptive alt text on all imagery, and schema markup to help Google understand the site's purpose and location. We submitted an XML sitemap to Google Search Console on handover.
A Squarespace website that finally reflects the market's global reputation. Fast to load on a mobile connection, easy to navigate with a thumb, and optimised to appear for the searches people make before, during, and after a visit to Portobello Road.
The site consolidates information that was previously scattered across third-party listing sites, giving the market a canonical digital home it can own and update independently.
