SEO for Squarespace

SEO for Squarespace

Squarespace has its own SEO quirks and most agencies do not know them. We build the technical foundations into every site as standard. What we do not do is run SEO campaigns, and we would rather tell you that than take your money for something somebody else does better.

In short

Every Squarespace site we build ships with the technical SEO fundamentals in place: clean heading structure, unique titles and meta descriptions, compressed and correctly sized images, schema markup, a full redirect map and a submitted sitemap. We do not run SEO campaigns ourselves. For a one-time audit or ongoing work we introduce you to an SEO specialist we have worked with for years.

What we handle as standard

None of this is an upsell. It is part of building a site properly, and it is in every project we deliver.

  • One H1 per page and a heading hierarchy that reflects the actual structure of the content, rather than headings chosen because they looked the right size
  • Unique page titles and meta descriptions written for every page, not left on the Squarespace defaults
  • Images exported at the right dimensions, compressed, and given descriptive alt text
  • Clean URL slugs and a navigation structure that keeps important pages within two clicks of the homepage
  • Schema markup via code injection where it helps: organisation, local business, FAQ, breadcrumbs, articles
  • Open Graph and Twitter card tags so links look right when they get shared
  • Core Web Vitals work, because page speed is a ranking input and Squarespace will happily let you ship a 4MB hero image
  • A complete redirect map from old URLs to new ones on every migration and rebuild
  • Google Search Console and GA4 connected, sitemap submitted, and a check that the site is actually indexable before we call it live
Where we stop, and who we hand you to

Foundations get you a site that search engines can read, understand and rank fairly. They do not get you to the top of a competitive term. That takes sustained content work, digital PR, link acquisition and someone watching the data every month, which is a different job from ours.

We work with an SEO specialist who does exactly that job, for one-time campaigns and ongoing retainers alike. If you want the work done, we will make the introduction free of charge. We do not take a referral fee, and you deal with him directly on scope and price.

Is Squarespace actually good for SEO?

Yes, with caveats worth understanding before you pick a platform.

Squarespace handles the boring technical layer competently and automatically. SSL is on by default, the HTML output is clean, XML sitemaps generate themselves, canonical tags are handled, and the CDN and hosting are managed. A well-built Squarespace site has no structural disadvantage against a well-built WordPress site.

The advantage WordPress has is not the platform, it is the plugins and the control they give you over edge cases. On Squarespace you trade some of that control for not having to maintain anything. For the vast majority of businesses that is a good trade.

Squarespace SEO limitations you should know about

Blog URLs carry a fixed prefix

Blog post URLs sit under the collection's path. You can control the slug but not remove the parent segment, so you cannot serve posts from the site root the way WordPress can. In practice this affects rankings very little, but it does affect how you plan your URL structure, so decide it before you publish rather than after.

Schema markup needs code injection

Squarespace outputs some structured data automatically, but anything beyond the basics has to be injected manually through the code injection panel or a page header. This is straightforward if you know what you are doing and invisible to most site owners, which is why so many Squarespace sites are missing rich result eligibility they could easily have.

robots.txt is not directly editable

Squarespace manages robots.txt for you. You can noindex individual pages through page settings, but you cannot write arbitrary crawl rules. This rarely matters for a normal marketing site and occasionally matters a great deal for a large one.

Multi-language support is thin

There is no native hreflang implementation. Multi-language Squarespace sites are done with separate page trees and manual hreflang injection, and they get awkward at scale. If international SEO is central to your plan, factor this in early.

Heading structure is easy to get wrong in the editor

The editor presents headings as font sizes, which encourages people to pick H1 because it looks big. Sites we inherit routinely have four H1s on a page and no H2s at all. It is one of the most common and most fixable problems we see. Our Squarespace SEO checklist walks through how to audit this on your own site.

The things that actually move the needle

Once the technical layer is sound, ranking improvements come from a short list of things, and none of them are settings in a panel.

  1. Pages that match specific search intent. One page per thing you want to rank for, written to answer that question completely. A single services page listing six services will lose to six pages that each go deep.
  2. Content published consistently. Not filler. Answers to the questions your customers actually ask, published often enough that the site looks alive.
  3. Links from sites that matter. The hardest part, and the reason SEO retainers exist.
  4. Local signals if you sell locally. A properly filled out Google Business Profile, consistent name and address details, and location pages that say something specific about the location.
  5. Patience. Meaningful movement on a competitive term takes three to six months minimum. Anyone promising faster is either lucky or lying.

Migrations: keeping the rankings you already have

The fastest way to lose organic traffic is to rebuild a site and let the old URLs 404. We map every existing URL to its new destination before launch, put the 301s in place on go-live day, and watch Search Console for crawl errors through the following weeks.

This matters most when you are moving off another platform, where URL structures rarely line up. It is part of every website build we do, not an optional extra.

Local SEO and location pages

If your customers search with a place name attached, you need pages that address that. We build them as part of the site structure rather than bolting them on later. Ours are here for London, Manchester, New York and Dubai, and they are a reasonable model for how yours should look: specific, useful, and not the same paragraph with the city name swapped.

FAQ

Squarespace SEO questions

Yes. Squarespace handles SSL, clean HTML output, canonical tags and XML sitemaps automatically, and a well-built Squarespace site has no structural disadvantage against a well-built WordPress site. The limitations are around control rather than capability: blog URL prefixes are fixed, robots.txt is not directly editable, schema markup needs manual injection and there is no native hreflang support.

No. We build the technical SEO foundations into every site as standard, but we do not run SEO campaigns. For a one-time audit or ongoing work we introduce you to an SEO specialist we have worked with for years. The introduction is free of charge, we take no referral fee, and you agree scope and pricing with him directly.

Heading hierarchy, unique titles and meta descriptions on every page, image compression and alt text, clean URL slugs, schema markup via code injection, Open Graph tags, Core Web Vitals optimisation, a full redirect map from your old URLs, and Google Search Console plus GA4 connected with the sitemap submitted.

Three to six months before meaningful movement on a competitive term, longer in crowded markets. Technical fixes can show up faster, sometimes within weeks, because you are removing something that was actively holding the site back rather than building new authority.

Only if the redirects are handled badly, which is the most common cause of traffic loss after a rebuild. We map every existing URL to its new destination before launch, put 301 redirects in place on go-live day and monitor Search Console for crawl errors afterwards. Done properly, a rebuild usually improves rankings because the technical foundations get fixed at the same time.

Yes. Squarespace outputs basic structured data automatically, and anything beyond that goes in through code injection, either sitewide or per page. We add organisation, local business, FAQ, breadcrumb and article schema where it makes a page eligible for rich results.

If you want to rank for anything beyond your own brand name, yes. Search engines reward sites that answer specific questions thoroughly, and a blog is the practical way to publish those answers. Consistency matters more than volume, and one useful post a month beats ten thin ones.

We build location pages as part of the site structure and make sure your name, address and phone details are consistent across the site and marked up correctly. Managing a Google Business Profile ongoing, chasing reviews and running local campaigns sits with our SEO partner, and we are happy to make that introduction.
