What goes wrong with an AI-generated site

Nothing goes wrong on day one. The site looks good, it is live, and it cost you an afternoon instead of five thousand pounds. The problems arrive in month two, and they are always the same ones.

• You cannot make a small change. Updating a phone number means finding it in the code or re-prompting, and re-prompting regenerates things you did not ask it to touch.
• There is no CMS. Publishing a blog post is a code change. So is adding a team member, a product, or a testimonial.
• The forms go nowhere. AI tools produce form markup, not a form handler. Plenty of AI-built sites have been quietly collecting nothing for months.
• Nobody else can pick it up. Hand the folder to a designer or an assistant and watch what happens. The site is only maintainable by whoever holds the original chat thread.
• Hosting, domains, SSL and deploys are now your job. Which is fine until something breaks on a Friday.
• The SEO basics are missing. Usually one page title reused everywhere, no meta descriptions, uncompressed images, no sitemap, no analytics.

None of this means the AI did a bad job. It means a generated site is a design deliverable, not a running website. The conversion turns one into the other.

That means a real CMS behind every section you are likely to change, forms that deliver to your inbox and your CRM, GA4 and Search Console connected, page titles and meta descriptions written for each page, images compressed and sized properly, and the domain moved across with redirects in place if the old site had any traffic worth keeping.

You finish with a site you can edit in a normal editor, plus a screen recording walking through your specific site so you know where everything lives. The technical work that was sitting on your plate goes back to being somebody else's.

Which tools we convert from

Claude artifacts and Claude Code projects, ChatGPT and Canvas output, Lovable, v0, Bolt, Replit, Framer AI and Wix ADI. The list keeps growing and the export format matters less than people expect, because we rebuild rather than port. A React app, a folder of static HTML and a screenshot all give us the same thing: the design intent, which is the part worth keeping.

That also means you do not need to hand over anything clever. A live URL is enough. If you have the code or the original prompts, send them, they occasionally answer a question about intent, but they are not required.

What stays the same and what changes

Stays: the layout, the type choices, the colour, the copy, the structure, and the general feel of the thing you approved.

Changes: Squarespace has its own layout engine, so we match the design closely rather than pixel for pixel. Where an AI tool has produced something Squarespace cannot do natively, we either extend it with custom CSS or tell you the honest cost of insisting on it. Occasionally we will push back on a detail, usually a font size that does not survive on mobile or an animation that costs more in load time than it returns.

Gained: a CMS, working forms, analytics, SEO metadata, SSL and hosting handled, and the ability to hand the site to somebody else without an apology.

When you should not convert

We would rather say this on the page than on an invoice.

If what you built is genuinely an application, with logic, accounts, a database or anything a marketing site does not do, Squarespace is the wrong destination and we will tell you so. If you are technical, happy deploying, and the only thing you actually want is somewhere to put it, use Vercel, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages. They are free at your volume, they take about ten minutes, and paying us to host a static site would be a waste of your money. We do not offer hosting for AI-generated sites, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight.

If the site is a throwaway campaign page with a three week life, leave it where it is. The conversion is worth doing when the site has to keep earning for a year or more and somebody non-technical has to maintain it.

Is Squarespace better than an AI-generated site?

For a business website that has to be maintained by people, yes, and the reason is not design quality. AI tools have got good at design. What they have not solved is the second year: content management, editing by non-technical staff, a support route when something breaks, and the accumulated small changes that every real business site needs.

Squarespace is deliberately boring on all four. It is not the most powerful tool available and it is not trying to be. It is the one your marketing coordinator can update on a Tuesday without opening a terminal.

Plenty of businesses use both, which is the sensible answer. Generate the concept with AI, then have it built somewhere it can live. That is cheaper than a traditional design process and more durable than shipping the generated output.

Conversions follow our standard website pricing, because a conversion is a rebuild. A single page starts at $1,500, up to five pages at $2,750, and larger or more complicated sites at $6,500. Timelines run shorter than a design project, usually one to three weeks, because the design decisions have already been made and you are not sitting through concept rounds.
