Squarespace Mailchimp Integration

Mailchimp is the one most Squarespace sites already have, usually connected to a single undifferentiated audience that nobody can segment. Connecting it well is mostly a data modelling question, not a technical one.

In short

Form capture into the right audience with tags and merge fields set up so you can segment later. Typically a one to three hour job.

What connecting Mailchimp to Squarespace involves

  • Signup forms writing into the correct audience with tags identifying where the subscriber came from.
  • Merge fields created before the first submission, because Mailchimp silently drops data for fields that do not exist yet.
  • Separating genuine newsletter signups from contact form enquiries, which are different intents and should not share a list.
  • Double opt-in configured deliberately rather than left on whatever the default was.

The part that usually goes wrong

Mailchimp bills per audience, so the temptation is one audience for everything. That is the right call, but only if you tag on the way in. Sites that skip tagging end up with one list of 4,000 people and no way to tell who asked for what, which makes every future campaign a broadcast.

What we get asked for

  • Signup forms with source tagging
  • Merge fields and segmentation setup
  • Separating enquiries from newsletter subscribers
  • Cleaning up a single untagged audience

How it is built

There are four ways into Squarespace: native integrations where one exists, embed and code blocks, code injection, and an automation layer such as Zapier or Make. Choosing the right one is most of the job. We pick the route that needs the least maintenance rather than the one that is quickest to build, because you are the one who lives with it afterwards.

Integrations are written defensively, with feature detection rather than assumptions about Squarespace internals, and fallbacks that fail quietly rather than visibly. Everything is commented and handed over with a note on what it does and where it lives. If it breaks after a Squarespace update, our support service covers fixing it.

What it costs

Integration work is $100 an hour, scoped with a fixed estimate before we start. Most single-tool integrations land between one and six hours. If your setup turns out to need more than that, we tell you before doing the work rather than after. Read more about how we handle Squarespace integrations generally.

FAQ

Mailchimp and Squarespace questions

Almost always because the merge field did not exist in Mailchimp when the form submitted. Mailchimp accepts the subscriber and discards the unrecognised field without an error. We create the fields first, then connect the form.

Same audience is fine and cheaper. Same tag is not. Somebody asking for a quote has not asked for your newsletter, and mailing them as though they did is how you collect spam complaints.

Partly. We can tag going forward immediately. Backfilling historical subscribers depends on whether the source is recoverable from signup dates or campaign activity. We will tell you what is realistically recoverable before you pay for it.
