A patient picking a new chiropractor, therapist or med spa checks reviews before booking. Recent research puts review sentiment behind 73% of that decision, and 89% of patients look up reviews before choosing a new provider at all. That's a higher trust bar than a restaurant site or a real estate listing page has to clear, because the visitor isn't just deciding whether the place looks good. They're deciding whether to hand this practice their health information. That's the bar wellness and healthcare sites have to clear, and it's usually the point where a Squarespace web designer stops being about how the page looks and starts being about the forms behind it.
Healthcare and wellness aren't the same build
The two get lumped together, but a physical therapy clinic and a yoga studio need different things from a site. A therapist, chiropractor, physical therapist or med spa collects health information through intake forms: symptoms, insurance details, treatment history. In the US, that data falls under HIPAA, and the site capturing it carries different obligations than the booking page for a yoga class or a massage add-on. A wellness studio mostly needs a name, an email and a card number. Work out which side of that line your practice sits on before you plan the build. It changes what the site actually needs.
The compliance question Squarespace doesn't answer for you
Squarespace's native contact and booking forms aren't built to hold protected health information, and Squarespace doesn't sign a business associate agreement for those standard forms. The one exception is scheduling: a BAA is available for Acuity Scheduling specifically, not for a page's contact form or intake questions. A practice that needs to collect symptoms, insurance numbers or treatment history has to route that data somewhere else, usually a HIPAA-compliant form service such as Hushmail for Healthcare or HIPAAtizer, embedded on the page instead of built with the native form block.
The tradeoff is that an embedded third-party form rarely matches your site's design out of the box. Getting it to look native, same fonts, same field styling, same spacing as the rest of the page, is custom CSS work, not a settings toggle. A practice that skips this step ends up with a foreign-looking box dropped into an otherwise polished site, right at the moment a new patient is deciding whether to trust you with their information.
Booking is the page that decides whether you get the patient
69% of salon and spa customers have skipped booking an appointment altogether because it was too difficult to get through to someone or book online, and that number climbs to 79% for medspa clients specifically. 81% of clients want to manage bookings outside regular business hours, so a phone line that closes at 5pm is losing appointments it never even shows up as a lost lead. For a wellness studio, Squarespace's native Acuity Scheduling integration covers most of this out of the box: real-time availability, automatic confirmations, a calendar a client can use at 11pm on a Sunday. For a practice that needs HIPAA coverage on the scheduling side too, Squarespace added a compliant Acuity tier in 2026 at $49 a month on top of the site plan. That covers the booking data. It still doesn't cover general intake forms, which is a separate build.
Reviews and credentials carry more weight than the design
Design earns a second look. It doesn't earn the appointment on its own. 80% of patients consider a provider trustworthy once they see five or more reviews, and reviews now outrank a friend's recommendation for most people choosing a new provider. Feature them properly: a dedicated reviews section rather than one quote buried in a footer, and individual practitioner pages with real credentials and licence numbers, not a stock photo next to a job title. One caveat that's easy to miss: don't publish specific patient names, conditions or before-and-after photos without signed consent. HIPAA covers what you're allowed to show as much as what you're allowed to collect.
Where a template runs out
A single-practitioner site can run entirely on a standard Squarespace template plus Acuity. A few things push past what the template does on its own. A multi-practitioner practice needs individual booking calendars per provider, not one shared page that forces every enquiry through a single inbox. A studio selling on-demand classes or recurring content needs a member area with gated access, which takes more setup than a normal page. And a practice competing in local search benefits from MedicalBusiness or Physician schema markup, so specialties, hours and individual practitioners can show up properly in results instead of a single generic listing (the same principle covered in more depth in our Squarespace SEO checklist).
What actually needs a Squarespace web designer here
Beyond the compliance work above, this is where a designer earns the fee on a wellness or healthcare site specifically: matching an embedded compliant form to the site's actual design instead of leaving it looking bolted on, wiring up individual booking calendars and schema for a multi-practitioner directory, and working out early which parts of the site actually touch protected health information and which don't, so a single-practitioner yoga studio isn't paying for compliance infrastructure it never needed. None of that shows up on a template preview. It shows up the first time a new patient fills out a form and either trusts what they're looking at, or doesn't.
The short version
If your practice never collects health information beyond a name and a booking time, Squarespace with native Acuity Scheduling gets you a fast, well-designed site with nothing extra to manage. If you're collecting symptoms, insurance details or treatment history, budget for a compliant form service, the CSS work to make it match your site, and a clear line between the pages that touch PHI and the ones that don't. The platform was never really the decision. What you're actually deciding is how much of your patients' information you're responsible for, and everything above follows from that.
